Had a little better sleep. Getting over the jet lag. Still excited but damn it it’s still raining. Just a constant steady rain which has the potential to soak you to the bone. They say today is the hardest day on the track. Either go around or over the top. I decided to go around (disappointing decision really). It wasn’t any easier and in fact instead of doing the steep climb at the start of the day you end up doing that bloody steep climb at the end of the day……soaked to the bone…..8km straight up a track through a birch forest. Quite pretty but no time to enjoy it. Just freezing wet and cold….soaked.
Finally, made it to the convent. A beautiful medieval building which has room for about 300 pilgrims. Checked in, paid for my bed – 10€ got my stamp and organised dinner. 3 courses of pasta, trout and then yogurt. With wine of course all for 10€. Missed the 8pm mass. Have to catch up later on the way.
Slept like a log, utterly exhausted. 8 hours all good only one person snoring in the dorm. But have ear plugs and they work a treat.
For you Peter Whiting…. smashed my step count 45k steps. 32kms for the day.
Hey Bro,
have you got a Dri-as-a-bone?
Mark
Go AndyV. I did notice the massive increase in your step count. hope the weather clears for you tomorrow
So Glad you got through your first day safely 🙂 only about 34 more to go…….. I can’t believe you missed the 8pm mass though !!!
we all miss you xoxoxoxoxoxoxoxo
You’re a Pilgrim now Andrew, and to quote the musician Roger Miller, “Some people walk in the rain, others just get wet.” Buen Camino my friend.
Hi Andy, sounds like the first day was a baptism of fire but in a soggy way. You never know what’s going to happen tomorrow which makes the trip so amazing. By the way you said only one person was snoring in the dorm on the night of the first day……was that you?
